SWEATING-HYPERHIDROSIS

Schedule Telehealth

Types of Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating can be divided into 2 main categories:

  •  Generalized Hyperhidrosis
  •  Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis

Generalized Hyperhidrosis affects the entire body, may be present at night, and is usually due to an underlying medical condition which should be fully investigated.

Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis affects specific areas, such as  head and face, armpits ("axillae"), hands and feet.  Sweating is worse during the day and during stressful situations. The condition can cause skin maceration, irritation, infection,  emotional distress and interference with daily activities.

We have expertise in using all of these treatment options to maximize control of sweating, while minimizing side-effects.

Treatments

There are several effective treatments for Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis, including:

  • over-the-counter antiperspirants;
  • prescription antiperspirants;
  • Qbrexza (glycopyrronium), a prescription "anticholinergic" wipe, that blocks the nerve signal that is going to the sweat gland;
  • Oral "anticholinergic" Robinul (glycopyrrolate), which may be more effective than topicals alone, but may have a risk of more side-effects, including dry eyes and mouth, and urinary retention, among others;
  • Iontophoresis, which is a home treatment utilizing a device;
  • Botox injections.
